Where Should a Concrete Washout Pan Go for Pump Trucks?

Put the pump washout pan directly under the hopper, on firm, level ground, clear of storm drains, with a path for our truck to pick it up. Set it before the pour so the operator isn’t moving it at the end of a long day.

Checklist

Where the pan should go

  • Under the hopper. The hopper hangs low at the back of the pump; the pan has to sit right under it. The EPA points out this low hopper is why pumps often can’t wash out into bale-lined pits.
  • Firm and level. A full pan is heavy. Soft ground makes pick-up harder.
  • Away from drains. Keep it clear of storm drains and catch basins, and follow your SWPPP.
  • Reachable. Leave a path for our truck to get the pan out.
  • Out of the pour’s way. Ready-mix trucks still need to back up to the pump.

During the pour

The pump pan and the trucks

The pump pan is for the pump. The ready-mix trucks feeding it don’t rinse into it: they get their own container, set where they can back up to it without blocking the pump. That leaves the pump pan free for the hopper clean-out at the end, which comes all at once.

Compliance

Containment and environmental compliance at the pump

The pump clean-out is the biggest single dump of slurry on a pour day. If the pan isn’t in place, it goes on the ground, and that spill is an environmental compliance problem for the whole construction project. Keep the washout contained, keep the pan’s fill level in view, and let the crew know it’s the only place to rinse.

Your SWPPP should show the washout area. When the pan is full, call for pickup and disposal before it hardens and overflows; CleanSite hauls it away.

Pump moves

When the pump sets up somewhere new

When the pump moves to a new setup, call us and we’ll move the pan. If it’s close to full, we’ll pick it up instead. See portable washout containers.

Questions

Pump pan placement FAQ

Where is a concrete pump washout located?

Directly under the hopper at the back of the pump truck, on firm ground and away from drains.

Which pan fits under a pump hopper?

The 1.5 yard pan. It’s made compact enough to sit under a pump truck hopper. See pump truck washout.
